Cyrans

Pronounced: sigh-RANS
The Cyran species never got a latin name, like Homo sapiens did. This is because when the species was developed, it was essentially right on the verge of the Galactic Dark Age. Scientists right after that point were mostly developing weapons, and biologists were just ignored. Cyrus Reynolds, the mythical creator of the Cyran genome, is said to have refused the name "Homo cyrus" for his species becuase he felt it too slanderous. How vain.

The Cyran genome is the first known (non-Deathsmith) artificial genome in the galaxy. It was not constructed from scratch, however, but based wholly on the human genome. Scientists speculate most of the modified DNA and chromosomes were taken straight from other species off of the Ancient planet Earth. Some characteristics of the genome were "hard-coded" from scratch, though.

Cyrans have many outstanding qualities as a species. Compared to average humans from the average M class planet, Cyrans are stronger, faster, more robust, of better constitution, better perceptual senses (hearing, taste, smell, sight...), and usually bigger and taller. They live about as long as humans though.

The more remarkable aspects of their species notably drastic. First, they have a set of three blades in each fore-arm that eject from the back of each hand. They have a mettle web grown into their bones making them as light but stronger. They have naturally dark skin because a new cellular organelle was developed for their skin: the noireme. Noireme is like a chloroplast in a plant, light strikes it, and the nioreme produces nutrients that diffuses straight into the blood. This acts as a suppliment to normal nutrition, and also explains why Cyrans have such nice skin, too. Cyrans can taste common poisons; have stronger, metal-reinforced teeth; and can extend their K9's to be used as defensive weapons. Thier eyes are more sensitive in the lower spectrums, letting them have a "heat vision", or seeing high frequency infrared radiation. Their fingernails grow very quickly, and are stronger than humans.

Consumption of ethanol alcohol, like in beer, is a notable topic, too. Ethanol is oxodized much more quicly by processes of anaerobic respiration in Cyrans, producting a sugar-high like buzz in them. They do get drunk, but only after getting very hyper, amped, and after many drinks. A Cyran in a bar full of humans could be an instant barfight. The Cyran would probably win. No matter how burly the truckers at the bar, or even if they pull guns, a Cyran is quicker, stronger, and more lithe than anyone there. As a converse to this point, substances that get Cyrans drunk are at a premium price in the sector. Good ol' Rigellian Whiskey will do the trick. There are others which are more effective, and correspondingly more infrequent.

The most intense factor of the Cyran genome, is that when mating with a human, the Cyran genome is the dominant one. This means that if a humna male and Cyran female, or a Cyran male and human female were to mate, the child would definitely be a Cyran. This is why the sector is slowly filling up with Cyrans every generation. Problems can develop when two Cyrans mate, however. This is becuase the gene-pool for the Cyran genome is not yet diverse enough, and has only had five thousand years to evolve. Fife thousand years is squat to evolution.

The product of a Cyran-Cyran mating are of three ways. First, the child is a normal Cyran, with a higher than average chanse of having some sort of disability or general infirmity. Second, the child won't come to term, or will die as an infant. Lastly, and most unlikely, is the chanse of a feral exhibition of the more foreign genes in the Cyran body. This means that the Cyran child will exhibit undeniable characteristics of part of another mammal that made up his genes. These offspring are refered to as "Feral Cyrans".

A Feral Cyran will look like the humanoid cross between an animal and a person. They will stand and walk and talk pretty much like a human, but will usually be covered with fur, have claws, animal ears, and a snout or muzzle. Possible animals that a Feral Cyran could look like are canine, feline, vixen or rodentia. Sorry, in lay term: dog/wolf, big cat/cat, fox, or ratlike. This all has to do with the fact that the genes that make up the advanced hearing, sight, smell, taste and skin of Cyrans are derived from these animals...and all these genes exhibit effects around the area of the skull and/or skin.

Feral Cyrans are especially acute with all their senses, they are better than domesticated animals, usually. They are immensely strong, deadly agile, and can easily whip the skin off of a normal cyran, not even using thier claws. Side affects of this are severe though. Many Feral Cyrans are mute, of lower intelligense, and of porrer environments. This has a lot to do with the fact that normal Cyrans don't just look down on normal humans as inferiors, but they abhore Feral Cyrans as an insult to their species. They are often shunned from public places and descriminated against. There are planets of Feral Cyrans in the sector, but they aren't very affluent for just these reasons.

Cyrans have extended themselves throughout the galaxy, it's been said, but the most anyone sees of them are usually in the Cyran areas of the sector, and on neutral worlds. Normal Cyrans can usually pass for normal humans until carefully inspected, when the back of their hands, fingernails, and teeth could give them away.
