Ben Rey has lead many roles in his life, mostly those of leadership and organization. He has been the owner of Urth's Universal Sunray corporation which he founded and built (with help). He had taken on the role of leader to organize his company and the survivors of the first Armex attack to create resistance troops. Ben, after he left the planet...has even saved the galaxy fighting vastly larger foes created by the Deathsmiths. Ben has played the role of "fearless leader" and "fighting liberator" so much in his life, it destroyed his family life and has left him tired and bitter.
All of Ben Rey's life, he has believed that humans should be equitable in living rights. When he was Universal Sunray CEO, he spared no expense to help cities and nations struck by natural disaters and has been a missionary to other countries early in Urth history to spread the wisdoms he's known, medicines, and knowledge. Ben is a cautious fellow, and would rather enter into a situation late, knowing more, than earlier and stupider. He likes to have dirt information on people to stay on top of who's around him, but insists on treating people fairly when making deals with them. Honesty, integrity, and enthusiasm impress Ben Rey more than fame, fortune and firepower. A good example would be his mistrust of Mike Sterling: since Ben didn't trust this one Triconian leader, he decided to become so powerful that he would end up running the Triconians economically almost out of spite. Oppositely, he has always trusted people like Allan Hawk, and was best freinds with Joe Pournelle (co-founder of Universal Sunray), and intelligent andriods across the galaxy...they are honest and indefatiugable, and Ben Rey likes those qualities.
Ben Rey has fought hard to destroy threats. It is his goal to protect those people of his community, because they give him strength, identity, and purpose. He has shifted from saving human rights to saving planets to saving galaxies...to saving societies. But, for all of his hard work, the small things that he has always wanted have always been most cruelly destroyed. Namely his familly, his second wife, and even his past. His ability to live a normal life that he dreamed of is so far gone, Ben has mostly forgotten about it. Occasionally you can find him all alone, crying, when he has time to let his past haunt him.
This awesome advantage was multiplied twentyfold when Ben Rey was augmented by the by the benevolence of Jello White (owner of El Dorado, Deathsmith homeworld), which upgraded Ben to an I-class processor and ultimate-survivability package. This lets Ben be I-class smart, fast, interconnected, informationally powerful, instantly adaptable, and resiliant enough to fight other I-class borg...win, AND even survive direct blasts from weapons such a Proton Smashers.
Universal Sunray basically made weapons, sold services, and funded research like there was a mandate from heaven. Ben Rey knew if there was ANYTHING that would save the Earth from self-destruction by human hands...it was galactic membership. So Ben Rey fought hard and took all the risks he could to get fusion-powered space flight feasable and common. Ben Ray molded Universal Sunray into the primear space-vessle manufacturer of Earth.
Right before the first space-fleet was created, Ben Rey took a Peace-corps style mission to the far east of China, and was exposed to an ancient walled city on a mountain peak thousands of feet high. He ventured up to the city, was captured, but escaped in a matter of weeks. When he escaped, he essentailly proved his worthyness to be talked-to by his captors. Ben is lead to the bottom of the inside of the mountain, where there is a ancient vault. He passes the traps of the vault, and finds an ancient spaceship thousands of years old. Escaping from the vault, he is hailed as a hero, and is given great respect. Not just for that, but for bringing health to the castle and villiage below with his medicines. Ben leaves China with a servile family of Tiger Zen MASTERS who will protect him implicitly, help him become more powerful, and teach him Tiger Zen, too boot.
These Tiger Zen masters had one member designated as "Khan" for Ben Rey. Khan protected Ben Rey's life with such an expert amount of skill, he had to kill everyone who ever spoke his name bragging about Khan's own skills.
When Ben Ray was camping, two years after that, he was visited by a space-ship with creatures in it that looked very similar to what the Armex would look like. They gave him a tattered book that was approximately 2000 pages long. This, when studied, was the "fold bible": the quinticential guide to understanding fold technology. Producting it was only a matter of time now.
All that hard work was dashed to nothing when the Armex arrived, and decimated every single space-ship that they saw. Ben Rey became the unoffical leader of the Earth resistance against the Armex, mostly since Universal Sunray was more powerful than the Triconians at that point...on the planet. This lasted througout the whole Armex occupation, until Jello vanquished the Armex.
Jello, who was an old employee of Ben's who commanded a Trader II class exploration group of three ships, gave Ben a free upgrade to a Deathsmith survial (not battle) chassis with an I-class processor. Ben Rey was made completely invincible by Triconian Standards, but not by Deathsmith Standards. Khan, though...was remade much more powerfully than Ben Rey...and was not to be crossed with by anything in the galaxy...
...except Garnac. Garnac found Ben Rey a fabulous toy, seing as how Ben Rey never died from Garnac. Ben Rey's life would be ruined in subtle ways by a dream manipulator implanted into Ben Rey by Garnac. Ben Rey would become such a powerful asshole that he would work all the time, and this would tear his family appart. But Ben would survive this with a furry later.
Ben Rey is given a new Trader III class exploration group, and goes off to explore the galaxy for the last time, after returning to Earth. . Ben Rey during his exploration would run across an ancient planet, filled with aliens that would kill him, but his actual head would survive on battery-power and Deathsmith ingenuity to stay alive...and he would agian rain a body.
Ben Rey, upon returning almost three years later, would have only a pause to sit down and rest before going on his next, unexpected mission. Ben doesn't even remember what the mission started off as, but doing this was the last straw for his wife, and she took custody of the kids, and divorced Ben Rey.
This is the last anyone ever saw of Ben Rey, pretty much. He did go through a hellish ordeal with a thing called a Dyson's Sphere, created by Cyrus the Great...and saved the universe again that time. He did appear briefly on Earth one last time before he was whisked back to El Dorado to learn about a great threat on the other side of the galaxy...which was growing as fast as ever. Planets at a time. Ben has not gotten out of this module, nor will he for the next 300 or 500 YEARS in the future.
Some toys Ben owned once were a gutter pistol, compressed clip, gutter grenades, some excellent quality contraband commestibles, and even a Transmat Ring.
In the past, Ben Rey has had the dilema of his family problems. That was solved by divorse. Ben Rey has had the dilema of being constantly called upon at any time. Hellish reponsibilities, and those kinds of things. In the future, Ben Rey either has the dilema of becoming a Dracon or dying...or now that he is a Dracon...how to be free of Giluie finally.
